USS Tautog (SS-199)

USS Tautog (SS-199)

The following American submarines, submarine tenders, and submarine rescue vessels sustained the loss of at least one man during World War II.  Vessels listed in bold were lost.

In addition, two submarines (USS S-36 and USS S-39) on this list did not suffer the loss of any man of their crews, but are included because of the loss of the vessels themselves. Please note that, although no men died as a result of the losses of USS S-27 and USS Darter, one man each was lost in non-sinking (or more correctly in both S-27 and Darter's cases, non-grounding) events.

Known losses incurred by submarine tenders USS Canopus, USS Holland, USS Otus, USS Proteus, and USS Sperry, and the Submarine Rescue Vessels USS Chanticleer, USS Pigeon, and USS Macaw, are also included.

Please view the "Additional Losses" page for listings of men were lost while serving on vessels that were not sunk.  The 26 men who died on USS Bass (SS-164) are listed on an individual page.
